Manager looks ahead to Saturday
There will be no easing up before the finishing line as United take on Rochdale at the Kassam Stadium tomorrow. The U’s will end their home season looking for a good finish to the home campaign according to manager Chris Wilder.
“We want to finish the season as high up as possible; I’d rather finish ninth than fifteen obviously” he told Yellow Player. “So the question is whether we can get up there and whether we can get as close as possible. Ultimately we will all be disappointed because we have not achieved what we set out to do, some stuff controllable some not.
“Our home form and home results have been nowhere near good enough to sustain a closer challenge to the top sides. Away from home we have had some fantastic results. But at home although we have been on the front foot and not really been dominated by teams we have not picked up enough points to bridge the tight gap between us and the top sides. We have not defended when we had to, in the periods we had to, and not put teams to bed when we should have done.
“An old manager told me there is always something to play for, and we have an obligation to our supporters to finish the season off on a high. Personal pride is a massive thing. I was delighted that the players applied themselves last week to get a result. They are professional footballers and it is vital that they show what it is about again this week.”
