Chris Wilder's York Notes

Chris Wilder was naturally disappointed as United’s 100% start to the season ended at York on Saturday. United lost 3-1 against the League new boys, but the Manager believes it is a game that his side deserved to get something out of.

“Without being disrespectful we gifted the game away and were the architects of our own downfall.” Chris told Yellow Player. “It’s a game we should have won, and definitely one we should have got something out of, but we haven’t.

“We have worked extremely hard to get the three wins, which you have to in this league, but today we concede after fifteen seconds and then concede two against the run of play. Goals one and three were individual mistakes, and at the other end we haven’t really punished the opposition.”

The U’s played some eye-catching football at times and pressed the Minstermen back, but just couldn’t find that elusive second goal which would have made the closing stages very interesting:

“We got 17 crosses in during the first half and we just have to stay calm and make the right decision with those balls in. Whether it’s half a yard here or half a yard there. We kept going and we kept moving the ball, but the longer the game went on the more they sat deep and when the third went in they sat even deeper: I think Clarke Carlisle was sitting on the bar at one point in the second half.

“I was a touch disappointed that we never quite knitted it all together in the last fifteen minutes but we all felt on the bench that if we’d got one in that period then we would have got something out of the game. And then you have an unbeaten run and even if a point away from home is not ideal it is something when you are 3-1 down with ten minutes to go.

“Even in the last five minutes we still had opportunities and the amount of play and chances we had we just have to believe we are doing the right things. We were last week, we were the week before and not a lot will change. We will dust ourselves down and go again.

“We have nine points out of twelve which is an OK start, and we have to make sure that next Saturday, after Wednesday’s game,  we get ourselves on track again with a good league performance.”
