Oxford United under 18s beat Newport
United’s under 18 side got straight back to winning ways with a convincing 4-1 win over Newport on Saturday.
Chris Allen’s youngsters have not played since the turn of the year due to the weather but showed little sign of the lay-off with a well deserved win over the Exiles. The goals came from left-back Freddie Grant, a Josh Ashby penalty and two from top scorer James Roberts, taking him to 20 for the season.
Chris Allen told us:
“The last game was the FA Youth Cup game against Cardiff after which we had the Christmas break and then we had a couple of games called off so you are always worried that the lads might be a bit rusty. We have had friendlies just to keep ticking over but this was the first competitive match and I was delighted with the way we played.
“We might have been more clinical perhaps. I know that sounds strange after a 4-1 win but we did create a lot of good opportunities and should have scored more goals. But you take a 4-1 win every time.
“One of the positives was the return in goal of Josh Hill who has been out all season with a wrist injury. He did well and can be pleased but all of them can look back on this as a job well done. A good team performance and a very positive way to start the league fixtures again.”

Meanwhile United’s Development Squad’s game at home against Leyton Orient, scheduled for this afternoon, has been postponed due to a water-logged pitch.
