REPORT Wycombe Wanderers 2 Oxford United 0

Oxford United's good day off the pitch wasn't followed up by a win on it today as they were beaten 2-0 at Adams Park.

Having got over a major hurdle in their search for a new home earlier in the day, United were beaten by first-half goals from Wycombe's Sam Vokes and Anis Mehmeti as their two-game winning run came to an end.

United were second best in the first half but even so, it was a surprise when they fell behind to the first true opening of the night after 20 minutes.

Having lost the ball halfway inside the Wycombe half, United raced after Mehmeti as he exploited the empty space on their right flank but were powerless when his cross found the unmarked Vokes, who had the simplest of jobs to plant the ball beyond the sprawling Simon Eastwood for the opener.

Billy Bodin went close to an equaliser after good work from the irrepressible Lewis Bate in midfield, but ten minutes before the break the roles were reversed when Vokes gave Mehmeti the ball and he bided his time and then curled a superb effort beyond the dive of the desperate Eastwood to give the Chairboys a two-goal cushion at the break.

United improved after the break - they had to - and Cameron Brannagan and Yanic Wildschut had efforts drift over the bar as they increasingly forced the pace. Matty Taylor and Gatlin O'Donkor were given half an hour but got little change out of a well-drilled Wanderers defence. In terms of possession the U's were on top, but that one big chance just refused to materialise despite the game being played almost exclusively in the Wycombe half for the last 30 minutes.

Sam Long did his best to drive them froward from right-back, Brandon Fleming was lively on the other flank as a sub, but somehow the day belonged to Harry Hall and Riva Casley in a court room in the City of Dreaming Spires rather than anyone on the pitch this evening.
