MATCH REPORT | Under 18's Win Derby v Swindon

The young Us ran out 4-1 winners

22 April 2024

Derby day delight for the Oxford United U18s as they came away with a thumping 4-1 win over Swindon Town.

A game which was dominated by the Young U’s, taking only six minutes for Jack Lee to open the scoring.

The lead was then doubled by Harrison Bradney in the 19th minute after some great work from the midfielder.

Chances kept coming for the U’s and Leo Snowden ended the half-off with the perfect finish to make it three in 45 minutes.

The performance was then topped off with a pure bit of excellence from Louis Griffiths who made it four in the 55th minute with an unbelievable solo run. The Robins then got one back right at the end to deny the U’s a clean sheet in the 89th minute.

Both sides came into the game on the back of heavy defeats and were looking to show a reaction.

The U’s definitely learnt from that defeat as they came out a completely different side in the opening minutes.

It took just six minutes for Jack Lee to add another one to his tally with a tidy finish into the bottom right corner after some good work between him and Leo Snowden.

The Yellows then doubled their lead in the 19th minute with Harrison Bradney displaying his magic in the midfield and giving the keeper no chance with a strong finish into the back of the net.

The U’s kept the dominance going and were very unlucky to not be awarded with a penalty in the 24th minute after Leo Snowden was brought down in the box.

The Robins, however, couldn’t prevent Leo from making it three the second time around as on the brink of half-time, the striker got his goal deservedly on his return from injury.

The half came to an end, but it was one that no Oxford fan would’ve wanted to end.

The second half came around and just ten minutes into it, we witnessed a strong contender for goal of the season as Louis Griffiths took on nearly the whole team, going past seven Swindon players before finishing it off with a tidy finish and making it 4-0 to the U’s.

The U’s focus then turned to keeping a clean sheet as Swindon put all their efforts into getting back into the game or a consolation goal at least.

This would be harder than they expected as Monty Marriott was stubborn in keeping his clean sheet, making a couple of excellent saves to deny Swindon.

The defence was then tested again but stood tall with Aaron Lacey making a goal-line clearance that was as good as scoring one on the other end.

Unfortunately, a clean sheet wasn’t to be, and the visitors grabbed one back right at the death from the penalty spot.

A derby day to remember for the Young U’s as the game ended in a dominating 4-1 victory over local rivals.

Coach Pablo Haysham said: “The boys were excellent today, we asked for a reaction from the Stevenage game and that’s exactly what we got.

"Some really good individual performances, but what was important is that we performed as a team today and everyone played their part in a fantastic win.

"The boys trained really hard for this one and you could see how much they wanted it, a deserved win and a great moment for the squad”.
